At that time, air conditioning was generally only fitted to the most luxurious models of motor car. The intervening years have seen air conditioning go from a luxury option to a feature fitted as standard even to the most ubiquitous city car and even light commercial vehicles.
R134a is cheaper to re-charge than the newer R1234yf, and is generally utilised exclusively by vehicles manufactured up until  2013, but is sometimes found in cars as late as 2018.

Some vehicles as far back as 2013 are filled with this type of refigerant, with some manufacturers hanging on until 2018 to make the switch.  it Is more costly to re-charge, and not all suppliers have the facility to work on vehicles equipped with r1234yf.
